Scotland achieves 3.5% growth in company numbers in 2023

38,926 companies were formed in Scotland in 2003, a strong performance by Scotland’s entrepreneurs that saw it end the year with 3.5% more companies registered within its borders than at the same time in 2022.

Glasgow powered ahead in its customary first place with 9,064 new companies formed, a big increase on last year’s 7,323. Edinburgh was slightly up on company formations with 5,860 in 2023 versus 5,491 in 2022. 3^rd, 4^th and 5^th places were South Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire and Fife with 2,216, 1,985 and 1,689 new businesses created respectively.
