A record year for company formations in Essex

Always a powerhouse of business activity, Essex surpassed itself in 2023 with a record performance: 20,333 new companies incorporated. This brings the total number of companies in Essex to a new high of 153,732, an increase of 3.6% over 2022.

Essex keeps its 5^th place in the league table of English counties after this result, behind only West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, West Midlands and London.

Of Essex’s boroughs, Thurrock had the greatest number of new business formations with 2,489, followed by Southend-on-Sea with 2,385 and Epping Forest with 2,217.
