Cumbrian entrepreneurs show resilience to make 2023 a record year for company numbers

Despite business challenges like rising costs and interest rates, Cumbria’s entrepreneurs gave a resilient performance in 2023. At the end of last year there was a record number of companies registered in Cumbria: 23,719, or 700 more than at the end of 2023, representing a rise of 3.1% year on year.

Being a rural country with a relatively sparse population it’s not surprising that Cumbria came out 43^rd in the English counties league table of company numbers. But it has shown healthy growth in the years since the pandemic – a strong performance in the face of tepid consumer confidence due to the cost of living crisis.
