The total number of companies registered in Tyne and Wear reaches record high during 2022.

After a disappointing 2021, the overall growth rate in the county recovers well sitting at 4.8% – slightly above the national growth rate of 4.6%. With 7,838 new business formed in Tyne and Wear during 2022 – one of the most successful years yet – it is clear that business optimism has returned to the county.

Whilst not really a hot spot for company formation activity when considering there were only 7.1 new incorporations in 2022 per 1000 people, there was still a strong performance across the region with Newcastle accounting for most of the companies formed with 2,820 formations. Sunderland saw 1,595 new companies whilst Gateshead recorded 1,367 incorporations.#
