Record number of companies close shop in East Sussex in 2021

The total number of businesses based in East Sussex remained almost unchanged in 2021, up just 0.8% to 70,862. This represented a significant underperformance when compared to the UK as a whole, which saw average growth of 3.5%.

Whilst entrepreneurial spirit was alive and well and evident in the 7,675 new companies formed during the year, growth was frustrated by the record number of existing businesses that ceased trading in the county. 7,160 companies were dissolved in East Sussex in 2021, an alarming annual increase in dissolutions of 30.2%.
