Concern as the number of dissolved companies in Cheshire surges in 2021

After a decade of continuous growth the total number of businesses based in Cheshire fell by 3.9% in 2021. Company formations fell to their lowest level in nine years whilst the number of existing businesses that dissolved in 2021 hit record levels. As a result the total number of companies registered in Cheshire fell from 86,796 in 2020 to just 83,426 at the close of 2021.

Members of the business community voiced concerns as Cheshire appeared particularly adversely affected by the harsh economic realities of a second Covid year. Whilst the UK as a whole saw the number of companies incorporated in 2021 fall by 1.2%, Cheshire experienced an 11% drop in company registrations. Across the UK there was a rise of 45% in the number of existing businesses that ceased trading during the year, but in Cheshire the number of dissolved companies surged by an alarming 57.5%.
